How do I submit a poem or story?
Before submitting a poem or story, be sure to view the Story Guidelines for information about what a Why We Serve story is and is not.
To submit a poem or story, click here.
The fastest and most efficient way to submit your poem or story is through our website. Just follow the directions, and once completed, you should see a submission confirmation page indicating that your story has been received.
If you are having difficulty submitting your story through our website, you may also mail or fax your story to us at:
Why We Serve / River Walk Publishing
Attn: Story submission

FAX:
We are unable to accept story submissions through e-mail.
Please refrain from submitting the same poem or story more than once as this may delay the process.
How will I know if my poem or story is selected for a book?
We receive an average of 10 stories per day. It takes about three years to fully develop a Why We Serve book before it is published. The selection process is very long and many people read each story in order to choose the best 101.
If your submission is selected for a future edition of Why We Serve, you will be notified via U.S. postal mail and we will request your permission to print the story.
If your submission is not chosen for the book title you suggested, you will not receive a rejection letter, as we have many titles in production for which your story might be considered. Please be patient, as this is a time consuming process. Just remember that "no news is good news".
I previously sent in a story submission and my contact information has changed since then. How do I submit/update my new contact information?
If you have previously sent us a story submission via the internet or postal mail, please click here to submit/update your new contact information using our online form.
Can I submit my story to another publication if I don't yet know if it has been chosen for a Why We Serve book?
We have non-exclusive rights to the material, which means that you retain the copyright, and you may sell your material anywhere else you wish. If you have sold your copyright elsewhere, we would need to contact the copyright holder for permission to reprint your story. We are asking for the right to use your material in other Chicken Soup for the Soul books and in advertising to promote our book series, for the lifetime of Chicken Soup for the Soul.
Is there a deadline for submitting stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul books?
Generally, there are no deadlines for submitting stories or poems. If the story you submit for one book is not chosen, you will not receive a rejection letter due to the fact that there are future books for which it will be considered.
At times we will make a "story call out" in which we will ask for stories that pertain to a specific title. These "call outs" do usually have deadlines, determined by the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book

Regrettably, due to lack of research staff, we are unable to fulfill requests to locate particular stories or poems from one of our Why We Serve books. Eventually, we hope to have all the Why We Serve Stories and poems entered into a database that can be searched for on our computer, but until that time we cannot search through each book in hopes of finding a particular story or poem that fits your description.
